The Gift of Giving

Three humanitarians unwrap the secret of volunteering

By Kelly Westhoff

Ah, the holidays. Friends and family plan get-togethers, gift exchanges and lavish meals. Co-workers organize cocktail parties and secret Santa swaps. The malls overflow with cars and shoppers and wrapping stations.

While the majority of Lake Minnetonka area residents relish the months of November and December—and the good cheer and frivolity they bring—most adults stress about the inevitable holiday to-do lists. There just aren’t enough hours in a day.

Yet some of our neighbors have found spare hours in their days. Meet three dedicated, local volunteers: Dave Hill, Elyse DeLaittre and Leah Weycker. Although their ages span a wide range, all find satisfaction in the giving of their time. They share a common conviction that their time, while valuable to themselves, is even more valuable to others. And unlike the frantic holiday push that too often leaves us panting and wishing for quiet time, volunteering is truly a gift that rejuvenates us.

The remainder of this article can be found in the November-December 2007 issue of Lake Minnetonka Living Magazine.
